We recently traveled to Dallas, Texas to attend an Orphan conference. The conference was two days and was sponsored by the Christian Alliance for Orphans. The conference held a few large sessions that covered the personal experiences of orphans in the U.S. and foreign countries. In between the large sessions, multiple small breakout sessions were held. We choose to split up during these sessions to maximize what we could learn. Most of the instructors are experts in field.
Our topics included: ways to get started in orphan care, overview of international care solutions, trinitarian approach to adoption, implementing a balanced solution, engaging youth and college, bringing people closer to the crisis, giving a voice to orphans, holistic care, a journey of hope and faith, holistic care for HIV/AIDS, caring without an orphanage, and how to give a church's leadership a vision to organize. As you can see, the two days of the conference were packed from sunup to sundown.
We left Dallas the morning of May 2nd feeling as if our heads were going to explode with all of the information that we learned. The conference was well worth the trip and we look forward to implementing many of the ideas that we were taught. We plan to slowly implement these ideas over the next year. One of the most invaluable things that we took away from the conference was the relationships. We met many people that we look forward to working with in the future for a common cause. We especially look forward to continuing the friendships that we made.
